Rigging is mainly used in the lifting industry, and rigging itself is a general term, which includes two major categories, one is metal rigging and the other is synthetic fiber rigging.
Let’s start with metal rigging, which mainly includes wire ropes, lifting chains, shackles, hooks, etc. These are some of the more common rigging in the lifting industry. They play their irreplaceable roles in different operating occasions.
Steel wire rope has unique properties and a complicated and rigorous manufacturing process. So far, no more ideal product has been found at home and abroad to replace steel wire rope comprehensively or in one field. Therefore, steel wire rope has become an indispensable sling in the fields of metallurgy, mining, oil and gas drilling, machinery, chemical industry, aerospace, etc.
The lifting chain has the same function as the wire rope, mainly as a traction lifting component in the lifting operation. Compared with the wire rope, the lifting chain has better flexibility and breaking force. Especially the G80 lifting chain, this high-strength lifting chain is added with manganese during the manufacturing process, so as to achieve an indestructible effect.
The shackle is a link of the sling and also plays an important role. The shackle is usually called a connecting ring. It is a necessary connection between the wire rope or lifting chain and the hoisting target. According to different uses, the form of the shackle is different. Commonly used ones include D-shaped shackles, double D-shaped shackles, bow-shaped shackles, etc.
The hook is easy to understand. The hook is usually used with a lifting chain, which is more common in hand winches. With a hook, the sling can be connected to the hoisting target more conveniently. However, one thing that needs to be pointed out is that you must always pay attention to the safety tongue of the hook. The safety tongue is locked at the hook mouth under the action of spring elasticity, which can effectively prevent the sling from slipping during operation. It is the last protective barrier, so the safety tongue of the hook must be checked at all times to ensure its safety.
After talking about metal rigging, let’s take a brief look at synthetic fiber rigging. Synthetic fiber rigging is mainly rope and belt rigging made of nylon, polypropylene, polyester, and high-strength and high-modulus polyethylene fiber. The most common slings are mainly used. Many people may think that the strength of the sling is not as good as the metal rigging, and that the sling cannot be compared with the metal rigging. In fact, the strength of the sling is completely comparable to that of the metal rigging, and it is even slightly better in some aspects.
The lifting belt is made of synthetic fiber, which is much softer than metal rigging. Therefore, it plays an irreplaceable role in large-scale lifting operations such as wind power and shipyards. Due to its own material, it can provide good protection for the surface of these valuable large equipment during the lifting process, which is beyond the reach of metal rigging.
These are some of the more common rigging tools currently available. Although they are all tools used in lifting operations, each has its own unique advantages, so there is no absolute distinction between high and low. They just shine in the lifting field where they are better at.
